II. THE CRAFT OF DOCUMENTARY (HALF DAY)
People often think that documentaries are merely about an "issue" and the "message". However, even as the documentary engages with the world around us, it is also an art form like other kinds of cinema. This workshop de-constructs a documentary to reveal how elements of film-craft – cinematography, sound design, editing and the narrative structure – all work towards creating meaning, mood and impact.
   •  The documentary used in the session will be Tales from the Margins and other clips.
   •  Kindly note that this workshop does not involve any shooting or hands-on work.

So you've finished shooting your film, but editing seems like a nightmare. You don't really know how to put it all together, and the technical issues are mind-boggling... This workshop helps you grasp the art and craft of editing. There is a common misconception that editing is just the knowledge of some software. Editing lies at the heart of filmmaking. It is the art of where and when to cut, and requires an understanding of film grammar and storytelling techniques. This workshop is aimed at amateur directors, aspiring editors and anyone who'd like to understand editing to make more powerful films. In addition to the art of editing, the workshop will also include an introduction to the essentials of Final Cut Pro (FCP 7).
